Trip to Blockbusters!
We had a trip to blockbusters, to have a look at some of the films with similiar to what we would like to do.
Expanded Idea
As a group we decided that we liked ideas 3, 7 and 9 so we have to decided to incorporate aspects from each one to produce the final idea.
The film is based around four main characters with links to the criminal underworld of their city, they are known for many crimes but robbery being the main one. Each character would have some distinct feature about them for example:
The scene would keep cutting between this and one of the men at the poker game, this allows for a lot of close up shots so emotion can be shown in the faces. the man is on a winning streak so bets all in and as well as this throws in a clip of money and some car keys. His luck then ends and he loses the hand which is when the camera shows the emotion in his face and then cuts to a shot of him flipping the table (possibly slow motion.). At this point the other three men bust into the room armed to the teeth ready kill everyone and take the money.
A possible effect I would like to look at is whether it is possible during the poker shots to have a black and white effect but edit it to leave in certain colours like the colour of the chips or any reds etc. Much like the kind of effect used in Robert Rodriguez's 'Sin City.

- One is the man with the plan, calm and collected with an answer for everything and everyone.
- One is the worrier, the negative member and the nervous one.
- Ones the psycho, the one who resorts to violence whenever he can and doesn't really care for the plan.
- And the other is the joker, the guy who everyone loves but wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of.

My Brief Idea/Script
Deciding as a group, we have chosen to choose between a mixture of ideas number #3, #7 and #9. We have all agreed to take time to create a brief plan for the two minutes of our film, as we all had various concepts and interpretations about how we would like the film to be.
This initially starts off by displaying characters, smartly dressed outside of an old/derelict building. Here, the camera is able to cut to around 3 or 4 characters, each one, acting in a way that best describes how they would behave before doing a ‘job’. I have an idea that each one will be doing something different, for example…
This would cut to people playing a poker match… Everyone is dressed normally, but one guy is obviously dressed like the other men, smartly.
Again, the shot is cut back to the smart-guys… are now getting into the car… (We can use a jump cut here to show the car driving away)
This cuts back to the smartly dressed man, playing cards... who has obviously just won allot of chips, and sweeps the chips towards himself.
Now the car parks up and the men get out and start to walk towards the building that they are playing poker…
You see the man sweep the rest of the chip towards him, at which point another poker player starts going crazy and flips over the table, he then pulls out a gun. Quickly after, the men will open the door (could make it a garage door), with all guns blazed ready to kill everyone in there (except the nice man, of course)

Gangster Crime Genre Research
We have decided to carry out some research into the genre of our film, so we have looked at the Gangster crime genre and what is often associated with the genre.
The gangster crime genre or mafia films became popular in 1930 when organized crime began with gangsters such as Al Capone, this was due to the great Depression in America. Although one of the hardest times in America the film industry was then able to produce films about so me of the criminal events of the time and so the mobster film became popular. One of the main reasons they were popular at the time is because audiences could relate with the mobster trying hard to make a living and earning his way to the top only to have it all taken away, much like the people who suffered through the depression. The genre seemed to lose its appeal around the 1940's though and the gangster film was lost. Only to revive around the 70's especially with the release of 'the Godfather' which is to this day seen as one of the greatest films of all time. With the popularity of this gangster films became more popular once again. With epic films such as 'Goodfellas', 'Scarface' and 'The Departed'
As time has gone on the ganster film has had to evolve with the time in The 1930's they revolved around America and the great depression. In the 70's 'the Godfather' looked at a fictional Italian American family in 1945 to 1955, this movie shows us more in depth to the family and the human side of the mafia. Al Pacino left an impression in the film 'Scarface' In 1983 the film is set in the 1980's and is centred around drugs which were becoming more popular at the time especially the use of cocaine. Now in 2006 a more modern feeling crime film like 'the Departed' feels more up to date even though it is still set in the 70's.
Britain has become known for it's more urban form of the gangster crime film bringing it to a modern day films such as 'Lock Stock and two Smoking Barrels' and 'Snatch' have earned they're right as some of the greatest gangster crime films.
A common theme in gangster films is one mans rise to power only for it to fall apart in the end, usually by being arrested or killed. This is because they can't promote that crime brings a good life it has to end with the law winning. There is also often a lot of double crossing and betraying which leads to a twist in the story and keeps the audience interested. Organized crime is another big theme, murders and robberies, drugs and alcohol are seen a lot in this genre.
Most Gangster crime films are usually based on books and true stories as well as stereotypes and ideas people already have of for example the mafia.
This genre of film usually contains a main man in power for example the Don of a mafia family, or a man who rises up to gain power.

- Cars - Nice expensive cars
- Drugs - usually large amounts for dealing.
- Murder and organized crime - with betrayal, double crossing, bribery paying the police, everything is organized so they have power.
- A horses head - the real mafia way of saying you die next.
